Congratulations to the University of California San Diego library, which handled the 7,000,000th QuestionPoint transaction on Wednesday, 9/21, at 4:30 p.m. Pacific Time. The question, inquiring about the open hours of Academic Computing and Media Services labs, came via an SMS text message.
The question received prompt attention. The librarian’s answer demonstrates the on-page utility to shorten long URLs—with her answer, she provided a minified URL for further information on lab hours. First introduced with the QuestionPoint texting capability, the minifier is especially useful in helping to keep the character count of text message answers low.
UCSD has been offering texting service through QuestionPoint since August 2010 (texting in QuestionPoint was introduced in March 2010). UCSD reports indicate steady texting usage throughout 2011, making up just over 14% of UCSD total questions received by all methods, including web form, chat, and Qwidget.
